Biography

Initially training as a scientist at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia with majors in Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Physiology, Helen Hegarty went on to do Medicine at Flinders University in Adelaide and interned back in Melbourne.

She moved to the UK and completed Urology specialist training, working at some of the best hospitals in the country (including the Royal Marsden, The National Hospital for Neuro-Urology and Neurosurgery and the University College London).

She quickly developed an interest in reconstruction of the urinary tract and incontinence.

She completed a Masters in Urology concentrating on neuro-urology at UCL and based partly at the National Spinal Centre in London.

After completing surgical training, she went on to do two fellowships at what is considered to be the best cancer centre in the world for Urology, the MD Anderson Centre and The University of Texas, USA between 2007 to 2009.

There she super-specialized in bladder dysfunction, neuro-urology, urodynamics, urinary tract and pelvic reconstruction and pelvic oncology.

She returned to the UK as a consultant from 2009-2013, where she developed the pelvic floor unit, bladder dysfunction and incontinence service, complex urological reconstruction and minimal access pelvic surgery and the urodynamics lab.

She also designed and developed a new Urology outpatient department. She introduced the enhanced recovery programme for patients undergoing radical prostatectomy, radical cystectomy and nephrectomy and was involved in developing and supporting the cancer centre at Southend for the East Anglia and Essex areas.

In 2013, she was invited to move to Ireland to continue similar work and since her arrival has brought her skills in urinary tract reconstruction, incontinence and bladder dysfunction and developed urodynamics services at the Mater Private in Cork and the UPMC Whitfield. She previously helped develop a pelvic floor unit in Dublin.

As part of her work, she is called on to manage complex bladder dysfunction and incontinence cases and tertiary referrals for bladder reconstruction, urethral problems such as diverticulae and repair serious complications from abdominal and pelvic surgery.

She also undertakes the yearly national Urodynamics teaching day for nurses and other professions interested in this area.

She has presented internationally on a variety of Urological topics and has been a visiting lecturer and surgical proctor in the USA, Australia and Germany.

She continues to present articles, posters and talks at national and international meetings.

She is active in teaching undergraduates and Urological Surgical trainees and is involved in clinical research.

Helen has always maintained a keen interest in teaching and mentoring and considers this a vital and interesting part of her role as consultant.
