UPMC Kildare Hospital’s Gastroenterology and Endoscopy experts use minimally-invasive techniques to examine the oesophagus, stomach, duodenum, large intestine, colon, rectum, and sigmoid colon. One of the key diagnostic tools used by our team is endoscopy.
What is an endoscopy?
An endoscopy is often used to confirm a diagnosis when other devices, such as an MRI, X-ray, or CT scan are considered inappropriate.
The following conditions and illnesses are most commonly investigated or diagnosed with an endoscopy:
- Cancer Screening
- Chronic Diarrhea
- Ulcerative Colitis
- Crohn’s Disease
- Coeliac Disease
- Anaemia
- Polyps
- Diverticulitis
- Incontinence
- Bleeding – secondary to haemorrhoids
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Stomach Ulcers
Types of Endoscopies available at UPMC Kildare:
- Colonoscopy – examination of the colon and large intestine to detect polyps, tumours, ulceration, inflammation, diverticular colitis, Crohn’s disease, and discovery and removal of foreign bodies.
- OGD (Oesophageal Gastroduodenoscopy also known as Panendoscopy) – examination of the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum.
- Sigmoidoscopy – investigation into lower part of the bowel.
- Proctoscopy – examination of the rectum and sigmoid colon.
Direct Access Endoscopy
UPMC Kildare Hospital also offers Direct Access Endoscopy, where patients can be referred directly from their GP without having to attend a consultant.
