Direct Access Endoscopy - UPMC Aut Even

Direct Access Endoscopy at UPMC Aut Even Hospital

UPMC Aut Even Hospital operates a direct access endoscopy service that is led by a team of consultants with expert knowledge and clinical experience in the fields of gastroenterology, colorectal surgery, and general surgery.

This service allows suitable patients to access diagnostic upper GI and colonoscopy procedures without having to first attend an appointment in a consultant’s room.

Patients can be referred directly to UPMC Aut Even Hospital via the HealthLink platform.

Referral criteria for direct access endoscopy include the following:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Dyspepsia (indigestion)
  • Ulcers, gastritis, or difficulty swallowing
  • Digestive tract bleeding
  • Changes in bowel habits (chronic constipation or diarrhoea)
  • Iron deficiency anaemia
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Polyps or growths in the colon

Gastroscopy and Upper GI Endoscopy
This procedure allows for a visual inspection of the interior of the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum without making an incision. Requiring only mild sedation, an endoscope (a small, highly flexible tube with a miniature video camera at the end) is passed through the mouth and into the stomach.

A colonoscopy is an endoscopic examination of the large intestine (colon) to enable a visual inspection of the entire bowel and the removal or sampling of any abnormalities found.
